It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas and with less than 4 weeks to go, retailers are well and truly in the festive spirit. The shining city of NYC is one of the world’s best-dressed when it comes to Christmas windows and each year they are revealed to much fanfare and festivities. Here are our New York’s Top 5 of 2018 to get you in the holiday spirit.
This year Barneys take a serious look at the festive season with its “Make Change” campaign focused on how even a small change can have a big impact. Partnering with global humanitarian organisation “Save the Children”, the campaign features powerful messages such as “Make Change” and “Change Matters” out of around 2 million pennies all of which will be donated at the end of the holiday season. Their social media campaign #Centiments also promises to donate $5 for every post.
Saks has partnered with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids to create this year’s theme a “Theater of Dreams”. In true spectacular fashion, the windows are a showcase of dazzling festive elements which all come together as a beautiful love letter to Broadway. For the first time ever, Saks has also included a digital storytelling animated concept to bring to life the impressive light, animation and colour show. The six windows featured detailed holiday vignettes that highlight the luxury of a shopper’s dream.
Macy’s theme “Believe In The Wonder Of Giving” tells a tale of friendship, family, adventure and teamwork. The star of the show is Sunny the Snowpal, a space-age snowgirl, who ensures that Santa’s sleigh travels safely on Christmas Eve with a little help from her friends. Designed by Roya Sullivan, it’s a traditional holiday adventure with a modern twist. The six windows also feature interactive elements including a full window-sized video game where passers-by can animate Sunny.
TIFFANY & CO
Jewellery brand, Tiffany & Co, once again pays an elegant tribute to visual artist Gene Moore. Using a chrome version of his drawing figure, the windows feature whimsical holiday scenes such as building a robot made of Tiffany boxes, putting Tiffany jewelled buttons on gingerbread men and even an entire window filled with vintage TVs. All of the windows feature the iconic Tiffany shade of blue expressed differently and the entire creation took more than a year to create.
The Grinch comes to life at Bloomingdale’s Christmas windows on Third Avenue. The displays tell the story of the Grinch, from plotting to steal Christmas to his happy redemption in Whoville. Green is the colour of the season and interactive festive elements include a magical camera that displays your photo alongside the Grinch, a Christmas karaoke machine and a glorious cacophony of a symphony created with the touch of a button. There’s even a fully decorated Christmas tree coming out of a window!
AND it’s an end of an era for some iconic NYC stores…
After 123 years in business, this Christmas will be the last for luxury retailer Henri Bendel as it will soon close all of its 23 stores. As a send-off, the brand's long-time fashion illustrator, Izak Zenou, has created a NY skyline in Bendel's iconic brown and white stripes.
